What else can/should i add to my tank?
I have a 40 gallon aftican cichlid tank with a great filter, heating, and airation system. My levels are looking good so i was wondering what should be my next addition? I have 7 yellow labs, four other Mbunas, and a pleco. Please, dont tell me that this is animal cruelty or that im killing the world, or that my bristle nose is going to grow to 5 feet or any other negative comment please just help me deside. Also ive heard alot of "experimental" combinations of african cichlids and other fish being tanked together and living happily. Is there any non cichlid fish i could have, other than clown loaches? Any possitive feedback will be greatly appreciated.
My sister has an African cichlid tank, and my mom has a South American cichlid tank. The interesting things about cichlids is that they seem to have very distinct personalities. If they don't like the fish that you introduce to the tank, then that fish probably doesn't have long for this world.
I don't really have any advice as to what fish to add next. It depends on the fish that you're adding and the fish in your tank. What I can offer advice on is how to add the fish.
The way that works best for my sis and mom is to place the bag with the new fish in the water. This is doubly effective, because it give the fish a chance to "meet", and it also gives the new fish time to adjust to the temperature of the new water. When you decide to let the new fish out, be sure to feed all of your other fish first (preferably on the side of the tank opposite to where you let the new fish out). That way, your fish will be occupied with the real food, rather than viewing your new fish as lunch. After that, it's really up to the fish.
