Home made Cave for my fish tank?
I'm getting apostogrammas and I know they like caves want to make a natural lookin cave with spending less then $5. Most items I should have (e.g. PVC pipes and such) it is 15 gallons so not to big.
A DIY cave is easy to make and does not look foreign like a white PVC pipe. I use the red clay pots that you can get at the garden centers for starting small plants.
I use the 4" clay pot (must have a hole in the bottom) and a 4" saucer (used to catch water when you over water). Go to Home Depot and buy a tube of 100% pure silicone sealer (clear) exactly like the product in this picture:
This is aquarium grade sealant and I use it all the time. Much cheaper than the stuff you buy in the pet store. Costs around $6 and lasts forever if you plug up the nozzle when you are done with your project. Make sure you do not mistakenly get the sealant that has a mold deterrent in the silicone, this will leach into the water and harm the fish.
OK, now turn the pot upside down and use a small hammer and a flat blade screwdriver to widen the hole in the bottom so your apistos can get into the pot when it is done. Start small, you can always widen it, but you can't make it smaller once you have started.
Now, take the 4" saucer and run a 1/2" bead of silicone around the top edge of it. Next, turn the pot over and place the saucer on it so it covers the 4" opening. Center it and let it sit for at least 24 hours so it will "cure." After 24 hours, it is ready to go into the tank for the apistos to use as their cave and nursery.
