Does anyone have any information? I would appreciate it! On my way to Panama City I passed throughPosted 8/17/2006 10:35:37 AM by Ms. MThe first weekend of August, I went with a friend to PC for the weekend... I grew up in B-town... after graduating in June 1982, I moved onto Marianna/Chipola, and then off to Pensacola/UWF to complete my BS degree... rarely coming back to town except for funerals... I live in Tallahassee now with my children, and haven't driven through B-town in probably 5 years... funny how that happens, even though I grew up in B-town, barely an hours drive away... It always made me sad to come back and see all of the changes...
This last trip we decided to drive around town, checking out the various areas within the City Limits, and within 2 miles of the perimeter... and of course, down River Street to check if the Apalachicola River still was there... lol... and it was, shallow as the dickens, but still there... and a sandbar in the middle of the river... that wasn't there in 1982...
I wanted my friend to see where I grew-up... He is also from a small town... so he kind of understood why...
I am really stunned at how run down many of the homes were on River Street, various empty buildings around town and people's homes in disrepair here and there... vacant lots that are trashed, grass in serious need of cutting, that little river/pond near the police station was such a mess, etc...
It was sad, and I couldn't help but wonder why this has happened... or if the locals, many of which I grew up with, could see this for themselves or if they have just grown accustomed to the visual look of what has apparently slowly taken place in this little Community...
I am not political, nor am I tied into any of the ~happenings~ of B-town... so I understand that it is quite possible there is a ~Plan~ for the Community... so I am given some benefit of doubt to those in 'power' encouraging positive changes in B-town...
However, this is not the B-town I remember as a child... People took pride in this Community... I just don't remember houses caving in on themselves and such a run down appearance in general in the City Limits...
I noticed in the Calhoun County Record online that school enrollment is down... I guess folks can't continue to live in the area with limited employment options... or dislike the slower pace and more rural lifestyle...
I am sure you can still build a nicer home and buy a nice chunk of land in Calhoun far cheaper than Leon... Try to build a 3500 square foot home in Tallahassee for less than a half a million or probably more... and if you are lucky, you can walk around your yard and not touch your neighbors house... lol... so I ~get~ the rural appeal in that aspect for the locals...
I know, that here in Tallahassee, I keep hearing that Bristol and Blountstown are going to be 'suburbs' to Tallahassee eventually... I have been hearing that for over 20 years, just like the new bridge was going to bring a boom to Blountstown... It did, briefly... but that is obviously over...
I admit that I got a nice upbringing in B-town...and a good education... not a ~fancy~ education, but strong on the basics... That still seems to be a good option for choosing a small town to raise your children... I couldn't do anything without my folks knowing about it before I got home... which is cool when you are a parent with a child, but as an adult, that same sort of chitty chat also occurs, and based on personal experience... 90% of the time it is far from reality versus creative gossip... So a bigger City does give you more privacy than a smaller town... certainly more recreational options, and choices for shopping...
I can also empathize with your children's frustrations for 'hang outs'... outside of house bbq's/parties... swimming, tubing, boating, fishing, hunting, canning, farming, the gun range, etc... it does lack any higher scale entertainment... and I am not sure if there are any Bars now, but back when I lived in town, Bars just seemed to spontaneously combust periodically... thunder bolts from heaven I guess...
Well, I have gone on and on... I do like the idea behind this website... I love the nice pics... but I noticed that their aren't any pics of what I have described in my little rant... they would apply as well... and might give folks a jolt of reality...
Change is inevitable... and change is better when it is for the good of the Community and its residents... and even though I am not a resident any longer... I was for over 18 years... My Father had a business in this town and was respected for his the honesty in his work... I hope my rant with give folks a moment of pause and a clearer look around at what Blountstown has become ... perhaps think about what I have written out of love for small towns... and memories of past days... not of malice... but of concern for Blountstown's future...
Light and Laughter... Ms. M

RealityPosted 8/23/2006 1:06:53 AM by trinaHave you ever been to a place where there is no opportunities what so ever? If you haven't you should come to Blountstown. The only opportunities there are is High School, Military, a state job, and last but not least jail. Most of the teenagers end up dropping out of High School and getting involved in drugs. We all know what comes next; jail. There is no where for the youth to hang out or do anything besides go on the river. Other than that you are almost guaranteed jail time, unless you have "a name" or you have money. If you have one of the two you can do whatever you want in this town and nobody will know anything. Now days you can't even have a cook out with music with out the law coming and trying to take somebody to jail. The people of this town should wake up and realize if they gave the youth something to do they wouldn't have to worry about who goes to jail next. The law sysytem of Calhoun County is outrageous. On this website they make it look so wonderful. In all reality they need to put down how many stops and searches they make a day for no reason, or how much they spend the county's money on the law enforcement officer's gear. They could put money towards other stuff like a bowling alley, a skating ring, movie theatre, maybe even a shopping center. We have none of the above. We don't even have decent motels for travelers to stay in. They will do but, not worth your money. Everything we do have is ran down and straight ragedy! I do have to give them some credit; in Cooper's Park (located off River St.) for the longest it was not even worth taking your kids to. The swings sound like they was going to break off at any given time the slide was horrible but they did take the time to rebuild the park. They now have a place to even sit! Thanks to the County Commisioner of that area. What I am trying to say is if the people of Blountstown do not stand up and try to save our community our kids will end up in prison. I say prison because it is more likely in this town they will be introduced to drugs by friends and classmates if not their parents before they see anything else going for them. We need more positive activities for our youth so they will have other steps to take besides steps with drugs. It hurts me to see a 13 year old boy with nothing to do so he decides to try crack for the first time and now is addicted. Just think if they were to have had something for 13 year old kids to do he mght not have done that. Sad to seePosted 11/17/2006 4:01:00 PM by slimI, too grew up on B-Town and it is so sad to see it in the shape it is now. The elected officials there don't seem to care to do anything to change the appearance of the place. People are paying more for taxes (there was an increase a few years back), there are more businesses in the town, therefore a larger tax base. I certainly don't see where the money is going. Have your political leaders gotten a raise lately? Until the PEOPLE start to speak at every meeting, things are going to stay the same. That is until the developers start to sweet talk the residents into selling their property for nothing. I get the inquiries all the time of persons wanting to purchas the property I have their. The rumor is that it is called "a river town" now because there are people (developers) out there who want to turn the town into a "retirement riverboat community." Someone is going to make a lot of money. Your leaders are thinking you don't care, so neither do they.
Speak up and that includes you young people, especially! life long memoriesPosted 4/19/2007 11:09:12 PM by tiffanyI grew up in blountstown i have just moved away an i am pround to say that i have seen all the renovations that b-town has made it is finally being comeing more then a blink one time an u miss it town. I OFFERED TO FRONT THE BILL TO HAVE A YOUTH CENTER BUILD IF THE TOWN WILL PROVIDE THE LAND,BUT NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW HOW TO PROVIDE THE LAND. I HAVE A SIXTEEN AND TEN YEAR OLD THAT I HAVE WANTED TO SPEND SUMMERS THERE WITH THEIR GRANDPARENTS, BUT I HAVE BEEN SO AFRAID OF WHAT WILL BECOME OF THEM BECAUSE THE LACK OF POSITIVE ACTIVITIES FOR THEM. OUR TOWN IS SO MUCH DANGER AND THE SAD PART IS THAT THE OFFICIALS SEEM TO FAIL TO RECOGNIZE THIS URGENT PROBLEM. We do have new schools, a good Police Department, etc., but we have no infrastructure, no opportunities for young people - nothing. The downtown area is finally sprucing up a bit with the addition of a new bank - do we need one?- I spent 35 years working in Tallahassee for the state and drove from calhoun county. I love this area and still live here. I hope it does turn around, but it appears to be too little too late.
