where should i place my bio filter within my koi pond?
should i place the bio filter in the center of the pond or on the side...it has to be inside because it leaks...but i was wondering if it should be in the deep area or in the shallow??...i'm wondering if all the water is getting filtered...right now its inside the pond but on the side walls??
Ponds are different eco-systems than aquariums so you should not try to treat your pond like a 10 gallon aquarium. Have you ever seen a bio filter in a river or lake? Mother Nature has ways for these bodies of water to remain heathy for fish and that is what you should try to remember when working with a pond.
If you have a new pond with a plastic liner, you may need to add some natural gravel to the pond bottom for nitrifying bacteria to populate. Then, all you have to do is make sure there is adequate oxygenation. Wind will provide most of the turbulance needed for the oxygen in air to work it's way into the water but you can always supplement this with air pumps and air stones or water pumps or water falls. You do not need to worry about filtering the water if you have adequate oxygenation for your pond's bio-load. The bio-load in your pond is the combination of fish and other living organisms such as water plants all the way down to suspended microscopic organisms in green water. Green water can deplete the water in your pond of oxygen very quickly so controlling or discouraging green water is important. Rather than using chemicals to keep the water clear, you should use water lilies or water hyacinths to shade your pond and reduce the growth of green water. Increasing the oxygenation with water pumps such as a power head will also clear cloudy water conditions. So put your bio filter wherever you can for now but once your pond is established you may not need it at all.
