How do I get softer water in my aquarium?
I live in an area that has very hard water. My tank is a 20 galIon community tank. I have been trying to get my pH level down to 7.0-7.1, but to no avail.
My GH level is about a 12, and my kH level is about 16. I can't seem to get my water any softer even after using a softener pillow from API. I used only the smaller pillow for the recommended 48 hours. (maybe I should use 2 pillows?)
Is there any other chemicals that I can use to soften up the water so that I can add other chemicals to get my pH down to a manageble level. I also have plants in my tank in which I also use Flourish Excel from SeaChem. I have been researching some filters, i.e. the Tap Water Filter from API, and other Reverse Osmosis units, or what about other filters like the PUR or Brita that you attach to the faucet. Would these make my water "more pure or softer" to help with this problem?
To start with I see you have tested your water so I will only give you a basic rundown of "soft water". The basic idea is How much disolved mineral is there in the water...and what effect is it having in my aquarium inhabitants. Softening the water means removing access minerals to the desired level, depending on the fish you own. Chemical treatments counteract the effect of the disolved minerals..BUT DO NOT SOFTEN THE WATER.
Another point after reading your other answers. There is no depending on the pet stores to change fish needs. A pet stores job is to sell fish...hopefully healthy fish....but the way a pet store keeps fish is in no way a model....as necessary they are sell tanks...very overcrowded...and most pet stores keep every freshwater tank at 7.0 PH in order to help survival rates. With this in mind they are bringing fish in and selling them as fast as possible...they do nothing to acclimate them to harder softer higher PH or anything else...so that advice is null. Some fish do need soft water...some fish that don't regularly get softened water actually need it, and do much better when they get it.
To soften water:
1- Buy an R/O unit (expensive) this physically removes all minerals.
2- buy R/O water..expensive about to 99cents per gallon.
3. Put drift wood in the aquarium..I have not tested this idea...but i have the feeling it will only counteract the effects of disolved minerals, as i don't se how they remove minerals.
4- look at your local pet store or online for a water softening pillow....inexpensive...works rather slowly I see you have done this but you may need to recharge the pillow , check the directions, and treat the water again.( this works the same way as the peat moss idea above but with out the side effects of water discolor...and you can usually recharge the pillow and use again. I have found that it is a little easier to control than peat moss or drift wood.)
Now the last...if you use R/O water you will have 0 minerals in the water, this is worse than hard water...you need to add the right minerals for fish health back into it...without adding to much or the wrong ones. Get a product called KENT R/O RIGHT, add it by the instructions and you will have "perfect water".
Edit: as far as purchasing a filter, I would get the R/O..the britta type filters would require replaceing the filters too often and the R/O unit will clean up the water better. The main choice between R/O units is how many gallon they will make in 24 hours....and whether or not they have a reserve tank. ( I have a R/O unit with a 3.5 gallon reserve tank and it will make 15 gallons/24 hours, I bought it through Culligan Water Systems and they service it every 6 months.) iwould guess that a smaller unit that can be hooked up to the sink should work if you have only the 20 gallon tank.....you will be surprised the difference that it will make....Ph will be easier to maintain...and your plants will go crazy growing especially when using seachems products( add seachem flourish iron to the excell as the flourish iron is a fertilizer and the excell is liguid CO2(most of the plants come from the amazon and love soft water).
